Master Composter Training Program

SOWCA is offering our Master Composter Training Program again this year (see the attached flyer).  The class is a seminar, with substantial hands-on practice included.    The $40 registration fee covers out-of-pocket expenses such as the class notebook (150 pages), “Healthy Soils for Sustainable Gardens” (Brooklyn Botanic Garden Guide series), and your name badge at the end of the summer.

Fifteen hours of volunteer work are required (between April 1 and October 30, 2019).  Many volunteers count their hours for Master Gardener credit and for Master Composter credit.

Classes begin on Monday March 11, 10:30 am – noon.   Classes on Mon. March 18 and Mon. March 25 will be at the Berkley Public Library.  Jon Dahl, Director of the MSU Soil and Plant Nutrient Testing Laboratory, will be our speaker on Monday, March 18.

Beginning April 15, we will meet at the SOCWA office (3910 W. Webster, Royal Oak, with composting and garden volunteer options available on-site  The SOCWA office and our community gardens are located just south of Beaumont Hospital, between Coolidge and Greenfield Rds.

On Monday, April 22, 7:00 pm, a public meeting on composting will be presented at the Baldwin Public Library (in downtown Birmingham).  This session will be counted as a class for the Master Composter program.

The Master Composter class size is limited to seven – and we already have several registered.

PS  Composting is “nature’s way with waste”…and the basis of organic gardening.  Compost benefits for plants and the natural environment are documented through extensive research.  I have been particularly encouraged to learn about new research re. compost benefits and climate change mitigation!
